Wearing yellow T-shirts and an occasional tutu, 404 participants assembled in Loring Park, Minneapolis, Saturday at 6:15 a.m., for Women of the ELCA’s Run, Walk and Roll 5K.
Between the $30 registration fee and friend-to-friend fundraising, they raised $19,116 to support the programming and grants of Women of the ELCA’s health initiative, “Raising Up Healthy Women and Girls.”
Erin Sinnwell, Rochester, Minnesota, a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran, came in first, running the four laps around the park in 25:39. Other early finishers include Erin Reynolds, Johnstown, Ohio (27:00) and Lindsay Klingenschmidt, Charlotte, N.C. (29:50). Reynolds notes this year she beat her time at the 2011 Run, Walk and Roll in Spokane where she came in first.
As the name implies, there’s running, walking and a variety of rolling. Lisa Plorin, Women of the ELCA’s newly elected executive board president, completed the course by “wogging, which is faster than walking and slower than jogging.”
Mary Ann and Jeff Dittmeier, Holtsville, N.Y., members of The Lutheran Church of Our Saviors, Patchogue, completed the 5K in 40:30, with Jeff pushing Mary Ann’s wheelchair.
Barb Hazlett, Cadillac, Michigan, a member of Zion Lutheran, has bone cancer and is on a transplant list for a new heart. Walking while sitting in a wheelchair, with a time of 45:03, Hazlett achieved her goal of making it around one lap.
Melissa Johnson Bills, a pastor of First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, posted this on her Facebook page:
First race post baby. Goal was to run the whole thing and make 33 minutes. Walked a little and came in at 34 minutes. TOTALLY PLEASED! Thrilled, even! Thanks to all who sponsored me!! Let’s raise up healthy women and girls! #welcatg, #allanew, #wearewelca, #runhappy.”
Bills raised $310 with friend-to-friend fundraising and gives a shout-out to her two biggest sponsors, her mother, Phyllis Johnson, and her synod bishop, Steven Ullestad.
About 3,300 participants of Women of the ELCA, the women’s organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, are in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the Tenth Triennial Gathering (July 14–16).
